On Open Day, we share our activities of the month with each other and the community on our company blog. It's when we take a step back and see where we stand.

What is Open Day?

Open Day is our monthly event where the entire team meets and each member presents the feature they built, the deal they closed, the blogs they wrote, the documentation they wrote, the problems they faced, the books they read, and everything else in between.

Open Day is an integral part of our culture, it enables transparency, allows better communication, but most importantly it inspires us all.

The best part about Open Day is you get to time-travel to the early days of Frappe when there were only 4 people running the show. All of the Open Day presentations since 2014 can be found in this Google Drive folder: Open Day

When does it happen?

Historically, Open Day happened every month. But as the team size grew from 20 to 40, the time it took to go through every presentation also increased. It began to span multiple days. These days, Open Day happens every 2 months for Developers and Non-Developers. It is still conducted every month, but based on which group you fall into, you present at alternate months. However, attending Open Day is mandatory unless you have a really good reason.

Open Day is generally held on the first Tuesday of every month, a message is sent on the Frappe Telegram group well in advance with details like date, timing and venue of the event.

All presentations are uploaded in a shared Google Drive folder, the link for which is sent a day before the Open Day.

Guidelines (offline)

  • Please be on time. With the company growing in size, it is difficult to manage so many presentations, being on time is extremely important to ensure the smooth flow of the event. As a rule of thumb, try and reach 15 mins before the given time, and you’ll never be late (duh).
  • Don’t bring lunch! Open day is a great avenue for the entire team to sit together, eat and chat.

Venue Checklist

  • All the dongles, HDMI cable and TV Remote are at the venue
  • All presentations are downloaded on a MacBook
  • Make sure the MacBook has Keynote installed
  • Ensure a good internet connection
  • Connect the laptop to the TV and set up display mirroring

Guidelines (online)

With all that has happened in the world due to Covid-19, we are forced to do the only mandatory visit event at Frappe online.

  • Please be on time. Respecting other's time is very crucial. A 5 min waiting time amounts to 5 mins * 40 people = 200 mins wasted!

Presentation Guidelines

Our first core value is Excellence. Presentations are no exception to this rule. Make good presentations and inspire others.

  • Use clear title and subtitle text.
  • Be creative.
  • Tell a story.
  • DFTBA!

Tips

  • Make sure to include your full name and month-year in a slide.

    For e.g.,

    Open Day October 2020

    Shivam Mishra

  • Keep content on your slides visual. Prefer images over a wall of text.

For e.g., If you are showing features, screenshots are always better.

  • While talking, don't repeat what you have already put on your slides.

  • When showing analytical data (numbers), it's often useful to show it in comparison to last month or last year (or both).
  • An ideal presentation would have a mix of:
    1. What you are responsible for (find something soon if you don't have it)
    2. Your own activities
    3. Your insights like systems, data etc.
    4. Any fun / personal fact
  • If you have worked as a team, co-ordinate with your team members who is going to say which part so there is minimum repetition.
  • If you are doing support (L1 or L2), then share 2-3 interesting use cases along with overall stats. Like I solved 30 tickets and these 3 were the most interesting.
  • Story telling is better than advice. If you have an insight, share the data or the story behind it.

Tools

  • You can use any presentation tool of your choice: Keynote, Powerpoint, Google Slides or even HTML 🙇🏻‍♂️
  • Export a PDF version of your slides but remove any slides that contain private data like Sales numbers and Customer names, which cannot be published publicly on the blog

The presentations have to be uploaded before the Open Day begins.

Code of Conduct

As a company we wish to inculcate and build certain values, there are certain things our culture does not align with, so it is important to follow the code of conduct.

  • Speak in third person as much as possible. We are not here to blame or accuse anyone of anything, anything we do we do as a team.
  • Use of profanity, racist, sexist or any derogatory remarks is discouraged.
  • Unless it is absolutely necessary, refrain from using your laptops while someone is presenting.
