The most important "growth" activity we do is hire new people. What makes a good hire is a hard question, here are some guidelines
Who is a good candidate
There is no rule here, we can't profile our candidates, rather we must hire for diversity. We want people who would be able to help us on our journey. They must understand what we do and where we are going. We must understand how they can contribute. Some characteristics
- They must want to be on this team
- Open to learning new things
- No bullshit - responds honestly and to the point
What to look for in an interview
- What the person has “done”: What someone will do tomorrow is a reflection of what they have been doing to date, very low chance they are going to change overnight. For entry level candidates this can be demonstrated by personal projects. For devs, we have flask test. This can also be gauged by asking them “how” they did it, the steps, the challenges, their achievement or contribution. A great way to dig deep into a person’s mind and capability.
- Genuine interest in what they want to do: They should exhibit some enthusiasm or passion about the job on offer. This will sustain them in their careers and help them learn and grow.
- A well formatted resume: Always a great filter - shows they care about the small things. < 1% of resumes are well formatted. Also check for spelling mistakes, missing details etc.
- Experienced candidates: Vision - what they plan to achieve at Frappe and how will they go about achieving it.
- Experienced candidates: Expertise - what is the core expertise they bring to the company and how it will fit in our requirements.
- Ability to stick to a job: A person who changes jobs too frequently is likely to continue the pattern. Someone who changes jobs too often means that they have issues with commitment and perseverance, or worse, performance.
- Customer facing jobs: Ability to have a decent conversation - should be confident enough to have a conversation and genuine interest in understanding and connecting with people.
