Frappe Technologies

founded in 2008

Eighteen years of

building in the open

Frappe at 18 feels like unfinished business. Feels like we have come a long way, but the path ahead keeps getting longer. It is about keeping an eye on the mission, while also enjoying the process as if the mission does not exist. It is about fighting new fights and deeper biases in an environment that keeps throwing new challenges.

It is about growing up, breaking apart and getting reformed. It is about the constant exhaustion of un-ending expectations. It is about giving up everyday and yet pushing hard. It is about the journey inside, the journey outside, the journey in the journey. It is about learning to live another day.

The long version

From Framework & ERPNext to an entire suite of apps, for everyone.

2005
A hobby project, before it was a company
Rushabh started writing the early version of what became Frappe Framework on the side, mostly because Python felt better to work in than everything else around at the time.
2008
A product is built, out of necessity
Built to fix an ERP problem for his own family's business. No plan to start a company, just a problem that needed solving.
2010
ERPNext gets a name
We named the project ERPNext and launched it on a Software as a Service (SaaS) business model.
2019
Frappe Cloud is born
Self hosting was never the hard part, servers were. Cloud gave people a way to run their own instance without fighting infrastructure.
2020
Democracy is in
Frappe started experimenting with running itself as a self-directed, democratic company.
2021
The first Leadership Council
Frappe had the first elections for the Leadership Council
2022
Pick your own pay
Everyone at Frappe started choosing their own pay, based on transparency, a shared performance framework, and a lot of trust.
2024
Sharing Cloud revenue with developers
Frappe Cloud started sharing marketplace revenue with the community developers building apps on top of it.
2025
Writing down the Constitution
The company sat down and wrote out how it actually operates, from how decisions get made to how the CEO and cabinet get formed.
2026
Frappe enters the agentic world
Coding stopped being the hard part. Letting agents handle the grunt work so the team can spend more time on design and polish.

18 & still no licences.

We plan to keep it that way.
